"Old Fashioned"

I was never meant for casual

I was never meant

For small talk

And hookups

And saccharine smiles

And “hiding”

I was never meant for benefits

I was never meant

For sneaking to see you

And talking stages

And open ended, read messages

And avoidance outside a dorm room

Because there's so much love inside me,

I feared you’d drown.

And you had no interest in swimming.

I was meant for flowers

I was meant

For morning coffee

And cold walks

And comfortable silence with keyboard clicks

And a rock that reminded you of me

I was meant for reading the library of your mind

I was meant

For porch swings

And hand kisses

And picture frames

And futures

Because when there was so much love inside me,

I feared you’d drown.

You sailed the sea instead

Admiring all that was there.
